I used a scuba pro which was 7 mil and a hooded vest which was 5 mil thick

Open water Certification

First cold water and shore dive. We swam out to a portion of the wall (rocks) on the surface, did our decent in the sand, then worked our way back underwater. A tiny octopus sat on my hand and surprised me. There were tons of starfish and sun stars on the rocks along with a little bit of kelp. The visibility was terrible and the surge was strong (compared to what I'm used to). I also felt a little unbalanced with my weight. I wore a farmer john wetsuit with the bottom 7mm and the jacket 14mm. My feet kept rising above my head. Ankle weights will be a must next time. I'll also have to work on my buoyancy with that thick of a wetsuit. I didn't wear any gloves and my hands were just fine.
