Diver's Notes

For our second day of Caribbean diving we had "The Dive that started it all." When we first looked to book this cruise so long ago we read about the USS Kittiwake. It was the prospect of this dive that convinced Protous and I to approach the wives about getting scuba certified. To finally be on the boat ready to descend on it was amazing. We booked a private charter through Neptunes Divers in Grand Cayman. They were fantastic. We had limited time, so they were able to get us EAN32 to minimize our Surface Interval. We get to the dive site and the guide gives us a full overview of the planned dive and explained how we would enter the wreck and what we could expect. To get in the water and to see this VERY large ship was breathtaking. We swam along the Port side to the Stern. There we took pictures with the Kittiwake identifying marks and saw the large propellers. We made our way to the deck of the ship and made our entry. We dropped to the bottom of the boat and began making our was to the bow. It was a bit dark/murky in places so I was glad to have our dive lights. We made our way through many rooms and hallways. Saw Engineering and the large engines. Then the guide got our attention with his light and waved it excitedly. When I finally saw what he was pointing out I could not believe it. It was a MONSTER Goliath Groper. It was easily 450+ pounds and was MUCH longer then me (6'). His head and mouth looked like they would have no problem swallowing me whole. Unfortunately the pictures did no turn out as the water was simply to murky but it is something I will never forget. We made out way to a Bar and took some great shots sitting in bar chairs. We found a bathroom and got pictures in the shower. We also took pictures in the large bathroom mirrors. Seeing yourself under water was really cool. Once we made it to the bow er exited the ship and made our way to the upper decks. We stopped in the wheelhouse, and examined the rest of the upper decks. It was a fantastic dive and we got Kittiwake medallions marked with our visitor number. I look forward to a future visit to compare the pictures from now and then. This is a recent wreck so it should have much more life in a few years time. I would HIGHLY recommend this dive.
