Species Identified

Sphyraena putnamae Jordan & Seale, 1905 (Barracuda) Found near prominent current-swept lagoons or seaward reefs . Also in bays and inner turbid lagoons . Nocturnally active, but occurring in relatively large schools during the day . Sold fresh or processed into fish cakes .
Amphiprion ocellaris Cuvier, 1830 (false clown anemonefish)
Lioscorpius longiceps Günther, 1880 (Yase-akakasago) Found on the continental shelf and continental slope. Benthic .
Scorpaena notata Rafinesque, 1810 (Small red scorpionfish) Common in rocky littoral habitats. Feeds on crustaceans and small fishes . Flesh is tasty and used in making 'bouillabaisse' .
Heteroconger hassi (Klausewitz & Eibl-Eibesfeldt, 1959) (Spotted garden-eel) Often found on sandy slopes below 15 m; withdraws into its burrow when approached. Usually in colonies containing up to several hundred individuals.
