Diveboard alpha : D-4

Shared by Ksso on April 04, 2011 in News

It took so much more time and energy than I expected, but we're finally getting there ! Did you thing Diveboard was going to remain only a blog ? Of course not ! And while the blog remains one of the key aspects of diveboard as a way to share and feature interesting stories and interact with the community, it's time today to finally unveil the second side of Diveboard.
But maybe a screenshot will help out a bit !

As a scuba diver, there are gazillions of things I was missing. First things first, as a Mac geek I've been über frustrated for years to not be able to do anything useful with the dives stored in my Mares M2 - and let's be realistic the Windows software (IRIS) is a joke. On top of that I really need help to pull together all the info after a dive and fill in my logbook properly. Identifying the species I spotted, even just writing down properly the dive spot name can be challenging. Finally when looking out for the next places to dive, I've always been more interested in listening about fellow divers' experiences than reading marketing websites trying to sell me trips to any place I may have randomly typed in a search engine.

So we started Diveboard ! It started as a simple online logbook, but interconnected with a decent species database courtesy of GBIF (and interconnected to iobis and worms) and listing over 2M common names of species. As we were building the service we also realized how much all those observations could be useful for science and teamed up with those organization to share user's anonymized observations and help scientists better track the evolutions of the sea life. We built in from day one support for 15+ dive computers on Windows and Mac through a little web browser plugin, so you can upload your dive profiles right to the site (no need for the vendor's software anymore!) - we also support udcf file uploads. We are filling in as we speak a database of dive spots hand-collected from all over the world (and that's a painful process - believe me !). Of course you can add pictures you've been taking and stored of Facebook or Flickr.

But tracking is not everything of course, the whole point is to be able to share those dives with your friends or with just anyone fond of scuba diving ! In one click you can push your dives to Facebook or Twitter or paste a permalink to your dive in an email or your blog (we've got our own tinyurl : "scu.bz" )

That's about it for the alpha, but while we'll be busy enhancing this initial feature set and listening to your feedback, we'll be busy adding the explore section where you'll be able to get a dynamic view of a region and look for your next cool spot to dive - wanna see sea horses on your next dive ? we can help !
