Rising rental cost forced us to shift to a unit within the Big Splash Complex at East Coast Park in 2003. Nonetheless, it was heaven on earth for us; we had a saltwater pool right in front and the beach behind us. We conducted discover scuba sessions in the pool and organized Project Aware events with school kids using the beach as our classroom.

Pulau Lang is the mouth of the southern end of Dayang and a favorite spot for check out dives. Its name is short name for Helang which means “Eagle”. On the eastern side of Pulau Lang is the Lang bay, a small bay whish is usually used at the default site for performing dive classes. Its assets are its closeness to the resort, its basically sheltered conditions and shallow reef. Vast expanses of shattered coral rubble at about 10 meters, in the mid section of the western part of Pulau Lang, serve as a good opening for welcoming night diving. Upon going to the sandy bottom, there are hermit crabs, eels, scorpion fish, sponge crab, reef cuttlefish that are usual during the night.

Rayner’s Rock or Batu Ronchek is located at the most northerly point of Telok Jawa. It is a large rock awash just at the opening of The Channel. Here divers’ can experience swimming with mantas, whale sharks, bumphead parrotfish and other huge pelagic. The word Ronchek is not easy to interpret. It may be a variant of Ronce (Ronche) that means robbing or taking away by force. The site offers a very good drift dive, best done from a boat. Moderate currents are ideal especially when set from north to south past the rock. The current carries the diver southwards towards and past the rock on its seaward face, much exciting than the shallower inshore side. Here also are coral garden flats set in bedrock plus sea whips and scraps of corals. More over, a sheer rock slope leads the seaward flank of the rock where pelagic are usually looked out for. The more fascinating is the southern flank of the rock where you will find a spectacular jumble of huge blocks and boulders as well as plenty large grottoes and swim-throughs.

Pulau Pinang is a small island situated in the south east of Dayang. The name Pinang is the Malay name for the betel-nut palm– Areca Catechu. Botanists states that the palm is not found in the wild, meaning it could have been that previous settlers used the island to grow the Pinang to sustain this ancient habit. Pinang Channel is the narrow and rocky channel that runs between the little island of Pulau Pinang and the main island, Aur Island. Currents here are extremely strong and wild making the channel be scoured. The dive at the northern tip of Pulau Pinang is exciting. There is a jumble of large granites at varying depths plus the common linked grottoes, overhangs and swim-throughs. The western side of Pinang is rocky and is usually used as a refuge for dive boats in dreadful conditions. It is dived when a planned dive to one of the Pinnacles on the south is frustrated due to the weather or water conditions.
