Geko Dive Bali, Indonesia
(4 reviews) |
To say that the entire Geko Dive Team has grown very fond of Padang Bai is an understatement. If you ask any member of the team whether they like Padang Bai, they will invariably answer: 'No, I don't like Padang Bai! I LOVE Padang Bai!'.
Most of the people working here at Geko Dive come from or live in this very village. So we might be a little biased... However, Padang Bai is a real gem in Bali's touristic landscape. Here is why!

Started the dive dropping to 50' and swimming to the mouth of a hole that angled down and ran for about 25 meters. In the hole I nearly ran right into a lionfish resting on the floor, managed to get out of the way and point it out to Charlie who was behind me. Halfway through dive I felt sharp pains on my right ear and soon after on my top lip. It is likely I ran through some stinging Jellyfish. After exiting the hole we skirted a wall around the island. A large school of tuna was chilling just above an undersea pinnicle. I was having some buoyancy issues which I think was due to the mounting of the BP/W. I had not fixed it from how the crew set it up, sliding the tank really high, so at the beginning I was foot heavy and as the tank emptied I was a little foot light.

Began dive by fighting a mild current (~2kts) along a wall, toward the right. Came to the opening of a large fissure in the wall, inside which two sharks were swimming. One baby, one full grown White Tipped Reef Shark. The adult had a fishing line hooked in its mouth, which was snagging on rocks, so Kanuh borrowed my shears and cut the line as close as he could. There was an octopus hiding in the wall along side the opening's mouth, but not blending in colour-wise. After exiting the mouth we went along the wall following the current. A medium sized eel came out of its hole and swam around looking for another. Sculpin were sitting here and there as well.

Reports from Manta Point said no manta were around. So we went to Manta Bay again. Grouped up with Charlie (earth sciences professor previously at Caltech/MIT/NTU) and his wife Joanne, and the divemaster. About 5-10 minutes in, a large manta swam past, did a turn around, and swam past again. It was incredible. Five minutes later, swimming off with my own group, it returned and swam immediately past me (1 meter or so). The wingspan must have been over two meters. The remainder of the dive we found a little turtle and two octopi.

Beautiful spots and awesome crew
Although I dived with Geko a while back - I still have awesome memories of the time I spent there. Local spots are awesome, the crew is super cool and if I ever go again in eastern Bali I'll sure dive with them again! Wife did an introductory dive with them and it went very smoothly - now my only regret is not getting her certified there ;)
