Diver's Notes

WRECK Penetration of the ex-HMAS Adelaide

SCARIEST dive - due to missing buddy incident. No one was in danger at any point but lots of lessons learned afterwards. In retrospect a very good dive from a learning perspective.

Long Story Short: I entered the wreck before my dive buddy, and two friends entered between us. In the meantime, my buddy decided to abort the dive (not enter the wreck) due to insufficient weights - but somehow communication didn't get passed on to the second last person to enter. We swam through dark, narrow corridors from one end of the ship to the other, and when we finally regrouped, my buddy wasn't there. The guide seemed unconcerned / uninterested. We then had to swim back the whole length of the ship on the next level up, back to the start, then of course a safety stop, so about 20 minutes went by from when I realized my buddy was missing, until I saw him safe and sound on the boat. Quite an interesting imagination time that was...

Some Lessons Learned:
- Always do all buddy and self gear checks. Speak up if you think something is wrong (like not enough weights).
- Always communicate descent and meeting at bottom, and penetrations, movement, entry order, etc.
- TAKE CONTROL of a situation, if the person in charge (guide) is neglecting their responsibilities. Always bring a notebook / tablet for communication in emergencies.
