Vanuatu

Scuba diving locations in Vanuatu:
- The SS President Coolidge was a Second World War troop ship which ran into a "friendly" mine field, then, whilst attempting to get to the nearest island, struck the reef and sank. The resulting wreck is so large that there are a number of dive sites on and around it.
- Million Dollar Point lies just a few metres off a pristine white beach on the island of Espiritu Santo. From 1942, Vanuatu was the focus of a massive military build-up by the Americans and half a million or more US troops poured into the tiny colony in preparation for the great counter-offensive against the Japanese. Once the war was won, the Americans were faced with the problem of what to do with all the military material they had accumulated. The high cost of shipping made it too expensive to send back to the States so they decided to dump these supplies. Navy engineers built a jetty and simply drove the unwanted Jeeps, trucks and bulldozers into the sea, where they remain in a massive rubbish dump under the surface of the water.
- The seabed around the offshore islands of North Efaté is renowned for some of the deepest offshore canyons in the world, so pelagic life is common and visibility is exceptional.
When to scuba dive in Vanuatu:
The water is warm all year, with a minimum of around 22C, but there is a risk of cyclones between January and April.
