2012-03-28 - Koh Bon West Ridge, Phangnga, Thailand

26m - 42 min - Dived with Jurgen Zehren

Not much life for a site that commonly hosts mantas. Some decent schools of snapper and nice nudibranchs, but the reef looks quite damaged.

27m - 42 min

Needless to say, great dive site. So much life and abundant coral. Uncountable pipefish and 3 tiger tail sea horses. Tons of 'cuda prowling the reef as well. 3 more dives at the same site to follow. There were a number of four-legged blue sea stars around the reef, but no signs of peacock mantis shrimp.

An even better dive. Pufferfish and box fish all over the reef. Lobster, frogfish and finally a peacock mantis shrimp. Lots of harlequin shrimp as well.

30m - 48 min

Poor vis due to an unexpected yellow bloom, but still much to see. Frogfish and scorpionfish abound. A good array of shrimp and the biggest triggerfish I have ever seen. Impressive schools of 'cuda hunting as well.

18m - 50 min

Glad to see the rock settle down for the night dive. There was virtually no current on the reef. Tons of coronet fish and trumpet fish could be seen resting on the bottom. Hermit crabs were all over the place, along with swimming crabs. Saw my first decorator crab as well. Unfortunately, it was attacked by Ernesto, who didn't believe the species existed. Again, lots of frogfish and scorpionfish.

Extreme current coming in, head-on, unfortunately. Nice nurse sharks nestled under a rock directly upon descent. Great hard coral formations.

Huge scorpion fish and two great cuttlefish (until the cameras showed up). Saw my first fimbriated moray as well. Massive eels all around, especially the one who lives all wound around a mass of green coral.

2012-03-31 - Three Stooges Shark Cave, Mergui Archipelago, Myanmar

22m - 53 min - Dived with Nautica Diving Ltd Co.

Great dive. Dove through a wide channel that leads to the shark cave. A very technical dive into the cave, where two huge marble rays were resting. Exit was through a tiny opening at the back of the cave where the tide was surging in and out. No buoyancy issues or scraping of the reef, luckily. 4 marble rays total on the dive, a huge number of stars and dancing shrimp as well

Was interesting to see an eel and a crab sharing the same hole on this dive. Saw 4 more fimbriated morays. Perhaps the most memorable moment of the dive was seeing six white-eyed morays sharing the same hole, sticking out as if they were a giant hydra. Saw lots of spider and hermit crabs this dive as well.

Manta party! At least 3 easily identifiable mantas, possibly up to 5 or 6 individuals. Paused from all the exciting viewing to tear up my first shark cage as well.

This dive there were 6 easily identifiable mantas, with potentially 2 or 3 more individuals around. Again there was a manta with only one feeder prong, very identifiable fish. Great moment where Mark and I descended near the end of the dive. We were circled by 3 huge mantas and a surge kicked up, trapping one of the mantas right next to Mark and myself, seeking shelter on the reef.

Monstrous morays and a ton of lobster. Once again, nudibranchs galore and another sea spider. Great scorpionfish "hiding" on a mismatched sea fan, that was pretty memorable and would have made for a beautiful shot.

I won't soon forget the motor to this dive spot. The granite islands of Mergui are incomparable in their beauty. Dramatic cliffs jutting from the sea, layered in the densest green foliage. Mile long white sand beaches nestles along the water. Hidden caves. Feasting barracuda. Flying fish abound. An unmatched paradise. Underwater, we were treated to one of the best sites in Burma, with amazing fields of soft coral, many dancing shrimp, crabs and lobsters. Tons of box fish and blowfish as well.

I thought the morays yesterday were big, these were BIGGGG morays. Saw two honey comb morays. Beautiful nudibranchs and soft coral. Saw clownfish protecting their territory from some cow fish. Most memorable moment: I saw a crab drop dead and then sink down the reef wall, being eaten as he fell to the sea floor.

22m - 48 min - Dived with Nautica Diving Ltd Co.

This dive was nothing short of a heartbreaking experience. The fishers dispersed as soon as we approached the rock, mysteriously ducking their little boats behind any island they could find. We suited up and dived down into a complete holocaust, nets draping the rock everywhere. The reef was freshly dynamited, the ghost white remains of fish littering the sea floor. Every place where there should have been sand, there was death. Only small fish remained, plus a few eels and lobster. This was also my first dive at the helm of the group, navigating/leading.

Had a purge valve issue that caused me to drop 20 bar suddenly/rapidly, other than that, great dive. Tons of stonefish and lionfish everywhere. Huge schools of fish around the wreck. Partner shrimp and goby digging their holes. Marble eels. Huge trigger fish. A wonderful school of 8 squid.
