Diver's Notes

Went with Big Island Divers. The BID team -- from check-in staff to dive masters and crew -- were great, making sure the experience was fun and safe. The thorough pre-dive briefing was particularly appreciated. Our trip included a mix of divers and snorkelers. Our boat accommodated a few passengers on the top deck/bridge, which I preferred to the main deck. On the trip out (to the south of the marina) we saw a bunch of dolphins and I believe the previous trip saw one or two humpbacks. We were one of the last boats to arrive but also last to leave, seemingly presenting more opportunity, greater odds, to interact with the mantas. During the dive we set-up at three different "campfire" sites and saw at least one manta at each location. While we maxed out at two concurrent mantas, the quality of interaction made up for the limited quantity, with the mantas gliding right over the top of us over and over again. We witnessed a tussle between a bright yellow undulated moray eel and a manta in the "campfire" which resulted in the moray swimming right up to, and around, my feet.
