Diver's Notes

First dive in layang layang, south chinese sea, 300 sea miles from kota kinabalu

New equipment: seaquest SQ pro BCD. Other equipment from 3 years back still good. New UW cam (canon ixus 960), but not used

Heavy rain pouring down. Rough drive out to dive side with boat (20m). high waves. Descent from boat into reef wall. Problems with buoyancy: had to add belt with 2 extra weights (total 6). Descent then possible, but shaky - used a lot of air on establishing BC. Follow dive master along reef wall. Hardly anything to see. Light conditions bad; obviously looking for bigger fish like hammer sharks, but no vis. Tank on 50bar after 20 minutes. Ascent with 3 minutes safety stop. Surface heavy waves, rain.Waved for boat. Pickup by different boat driver. When grabbing rail, had to vomit. Transfer to correct diving boat. Waiting ½ hour for other divers to surface in heavy rain & riding heavy waves. Vomiting. Finally drive back to jetty, feeling slightly better.

VIS: literally nothing but blue sea, the dive master, other divers bumping into me, some darkish reef wall with a bunch of unidentified fish, and waves pounded by rain.

OVERALL: worst dive I ever had so far. weather conditions were bad, there was nothing to see and used up air too fast. "better start with the worst dive, it can only get better". Will skip afternoon dive and try to recover.
