2005-05-21 - Wreck Of The Wanderer, Jervis Bay, Australia

25.6m - 40 min

This was an interesting dive, although not really because of the wreck. There was very little of the wreck left, it was mainly the boiler, which was fairly intact, and a bit of a frame. As it was a mostly wooden boat this isn't all that surprising. The vis wasn't the best at around 10m for most of the dive, and a little worse at the end. Still what was interesting were the salps that we saw. I'd never encountered one of them before, so seeing two on one dive was quite nice. One of them was reasonably large, at probably 3m long, and 20cm in diameter and other was a lot smaller. I first thought they were large plastic bags floating around until we got close and then I had no idea what so ever. The area seemed nice, and I'd be interested in doing a bit more diving in the area around the drum sticks. Maybe next time we're at Jervis.

2005-05-21 - Sir John Young Banks, Jervis Bay, Australia

41.5m - 27 min

This was a brilliant dive. We had fantasitc vis, at around 30-40 m. It was also great because at times you couldn't see because there were too many fish. The fish were mainly sweep, pomferants, mado and similar sorts of fish. Still there were some nice sized sharks too. I saw 2 or 3, and one of the others think they saw at least 10. Perhaps he did, but then perhaps he was just very narced. This was also my deepest dive, at about 42m. The site itself was quite nice with a terrace sort of layout. It started up at around 18m, dropped off to about 30m, then fell right off down to the sand at about 50-60m. I went over the bottom ledge a little just to break 40m, but didn't want to go down too far. It was nice to see the sharks around on this dive as we weren't really expecting too much from it. They were near the anchor line when we dropped down, and also near the 20m drop off at the and of the dive. The others were a bit narced too, and missed the sharks at the start, however they did see them at the end.

2005-05-22 - Sir John Young Banks, Jervis Bay, Australia

35.4m - 34 min

This was another very nice dive, although the vis wasn't quite as good as the previous day. As it wasn't the first dive I'd done out there it had lost a bit of the shine. For this dive the fish life wasn't as prolific, but there were a lot more sharks on this dive. One even decided it'd buddy up with me for a while. Sat in a gutter at around 25m for a while with the sharks cruising around us. Very nice to see there were none with line hanging off them. There was one with a few scars on its head (The one that buddied up with me), but other than it they all looked to be in good shape. I was running a bit low on time for this dive, and didn't want to go into deco as I was heading home, so I headed up the line while the others went off around the other side of the ledge. While the vis wasn't as good as the day before, it was still good at around 20m. The Sir John Young Banks is a site I'd definately do again.
