Thermally, I was very comfortable. Weight-wise, I felt like I was yoyoing a lot more than I should have, but it seemed like I had to keep my lungs close to empty on the shallower parts of the dive to avoid rising too quickly. I had no air in the BC, but the dive was really shallow SAC was 0.76 cf/min.

Beach entry. Heavy surf (3-5 ft breaking waves near shore) and fairly strong surge. Dove the first line of reefs starting to the South of Anglin Pier. Weather was rainy. From under water, rain on the surface sounds like a million BBs bouncing on a tile floor. I felt a little underweighted and front heavy with the steel tank and 4 lb of trim weight on tank cam band + 8 lb in the pockets. I felt like my BC was rolling from side to side and it took some time to get it to stop it. Need to tighten it better next time. Next dive with a steel HP 100 I plan to use a couple pounds of extra weight and no trim weights (all weight in BC pockets). Also need to move the BC further up the tank to not get banged in the head. SAC was 1.07, approximately. I pulled the flag today. Switched to octo and it breathes fine (just testing it). I need a bigger mouthpiece for it. Derek was a good dive buddy. I learned that sea fans in South Florida are typically oriented North/South with their broad sides facing the current. Also sand lines run north south. Another nav tip was to check your compass on the surface, orient yourself, then check it again after right after you get under the water. Also worth noting for reference that the first line of reefs starts about halfway down the pier. around where the shelter structure is.

I was definitely underweighted this dive - finning down hard the whole time. Next time, add 4 lbs to 20 even. Otherwise, viz was really nice and the sea was calm. SAAC 2.11 cf/min.

Waves were chest high, making for a challenging entry. We were getting overtopped by breakers even when we had swam more than halfway down Anglin's pier. Dive plan: surface swim to end of first reef, descend and proceed generally west to second reef, then south, then turn around and go north. Viz was better out at the reefs than near shore, but not great. Fish were hiding in the corals to avoid the swell. Saw a moray eel (small)and little reef fish. Weight (20 lbs) felt good this time. I may be able to shed a pound or two next time, but I was easily able to swim the weight up to the surface and orally inflate my BC.

Dive went well overall. Saw a huge puffer fish, fat barracuda, a reticulate cowfish, rainbow parrotfish, and some really nice angelfish. Ran North along the second reef (past Anglin pier), then back south on this dive. Finished the die over the fist reef. At 19 lbs, I was close to neutral, but was finning down a little when my tank was near empty. Next dive I'll go back to 20, or maybe 21, pounds.

4.6m - 68 min - Dived with Gold Coast Scuba
Dived from El Prado park North of Anglin pier, out at the second reef. The reef was really nice here, I liked it better than at Datura. There was a significant south current (enough to basically drift dive). We ended up coming up well south of the pier and had to walk a looooong way back to our cars. Next time, we'll have to plan better and fin agains t the cirrent to start the dive.

9.4m - 88 min - Dived with Tom Carpenter
Long surface swim out to the SS Copenhagen. First dive with the Mares Plana Avanti fins - liked them better than the vipers. Seemed to have much more power. Confirmed the spotted sea snal I see is called a flamingo's tongue. Felt butt and leg heavy today. Next time try moving tank up and moving some weight to the trim pouches.
2014-01-18 - Bahia Mar Erojacks And Barge Wreck, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, United States
7.9m - 60 min - Dived with Tom Carpenter
Dove the bahia mar erojacks and barge wreck. Saw a large moray at the jacks. The barge had more marine life (schooling fish, lobsters, etc). and was the best part of the dive. current was moving south southwest; it was difficult to make progress northward either on top of the water or at the bottom. Weight felt a little heavy. I moved the tank band down to the old nitrox sticker, which helped, but I still felt a little bottom heavy. Will try moving weights to trim pouches next dive.
2014-02-08 - Sea Tech Ledges, Dania Beach, Florida, United States
7.3m - 66 min - Dived with Tom Carpenter
Dove teh sea tech ledges - start at the restaurant at teh south end of the dania beach parking lot and follow the cow path on th south that leads near the big condos. Swim uot about 2 pier lengths, past teh first reef line until you see a bunch of little undercuts. Saw big schools of angelfish, a spotted moray, and many conchs, particularly in the sand beds to the south where the ledges and reef taper off. Navigation went well - ended up right where we started. Next time need to look for underwater landmarks - we did the directions OK but we sort of got lucky ascending in the correct spot in the N/S direction. THere's a big anchor among the ledges near the south end (I think). Weight-wise, I felt overweighted at the end of teh dive when swimming up. I used 4 lbs, one in a pocket and one in the trim pouch on the first tank band. This felt a little better than usual, but still not great. Felt like I turtled more easily. Next time will try 0 lbs weight.
2014-02-25 - Yellow Brick Road, Hollywood, FL, United States
6.7m - 42 min - Dived with Tom Carpenter
Night dive on the yellow brick road. Spent more time chasing buddy than getting to see critters, and more time off the road than on. Weighting was fine with 2 lbs and the flashlights. Next time try 2 lb during the day. I need to find better way to secure the dive flag. Task loading was high with the flag and the primary.

Nice dive, stayed south of the pier, starting at the bio rocks and working our way north to the snorkel trail (anchor and cannons), then north - north of the snorkel trail is a really nice patch of reef. Saw a nurse shark with a hook in it.
2014-08-16 - Dania Beach Erojacks (John U. Lloyd), Dania Beach, Florida, United States
5.5m - 77 min
This dive has a long surface walk. Lots of stringy stuff in the water. The jacks lead out to the seatech ledges. I got a cramp in my calves during the surface swim when I was snorkeling, and it bothered me a little on and off throughout the dive. Need to stretch more before attempting this one again.
There wasn't a lot of marine life out today, but the Perry Street rock pile is a nice dive site that's reminiscent of the rocks and ledges north of the Copenhagen. Surface swim wasn't too bad out there. I switched buddies mid-dive - my buddy assisted a distressed diver to shore, and I continued the dive with the other buddy. We spent some time over the rubble fields between the Perry Street rocks and the sea tech ledges, which wasn't that interesting and would be better to just swim over it and out to the ledges. The 4 lbs of weight seemed about right for this dive. The first buddy had excellent buddy skills compared to others I've dived with, and is worth diving with again.

This was a night dive at LBTS from Datura Ave. Entry was challenging with 2-4 foot surf. We surface swam out to the second reef, dropped down, and established the current was going north. There was a lot of surge which kept us moving around during the dive and made navigation a challenge. We headed south along the second reef, then headed out east for about 10 minutes to see if we could hit the third reef line/drop off, but no luck. Decided to turn back to conserve air and headed west-northwest back to the second reef, across the first reef and across the sand to where we could stand up. This dive wasn't great for sightseeing (except for the octopus and a couple basket corals) but was fun navigating.

Left my boots at the dive site. Weighting was fine. Lots of angelfish. Not a lot of marine life out tonight. significant current. It would have been better to drift out on the surface with the current than walk to the site like we did. TO find the site, walk north of the Dania pier until you find a short white post that says "jax". it is a little south of the cranes at the port.
Could have done without the 4 lbs weight. Decent dive site, similar to LBTS but the reef wasn't as nice. Niel was a good buddy. Some swell, but minimal current and relatively easy entry/exit. Lost my mask and snorkel.
