2013-08-18 - Isle Of Shoals, New Hampshire, United States

7.6m - 45 min

Lots of seals on the rocks and quite a few in the water checking out the boat. Backwards fall into the water off Tom's boat into decent visibility. Very calm ride out to the islands from Rye, NH, about 6 mi offshore. Sunk down quickly as I was over weighted. Dan had trouble clearing and getting down. Kelp-ish/grassy bottom with lots of small creatures: crabs, small fish, tiny starfish, lobsters. Mostly small lobsters, too small to keep. Saw a few seals underwater but none too close. Found an abandoned lobster pot with a large one inside, dragged it to shallower water with hopes of picking it up on the next dive. Got super cold without a hood, instant headache and shivered for about an hour afterwards. Gear: 7 mm full suit (no hood), boots, gloves

Whitney and I went back in for another dive to locate the lobster pot and get in a little more bottom time. Visibility much less than the first dive at about 10 ft. Hood made a huge difference and I never got cold. The change in tide, picked up the current quite a bit and made for a more difficult dive. Whitney was under weighted but was able to stay down after adding a bit more. Really large seal made a drive-by and a few small ones checked us out from about 10 ft. Could not locate the lobster pot after almost an hour of searching. The tide carried us around quite a bit so they dropped a line off the boat and dragged us to spots we should check. Felt a little like shark bait... Gear: 7 mm full suit, hood, gloves, boots
