Spiegel Grove Dive Record January 8th 2013

Background

Spiegel Grove sunk near Key Largo on May 17, 2002. To the diving communities dismay it settled on its starboard side when it reached the bottom in 130 feet of water. Hurricane Dennis turned it upright in 2005. The 510-foot wreck is the largest ship intentionally sunk to create an artificial reef in the world to date.

The Spiegel Grove was originally launched in 1955 and then commissioned in 1956. It was an active US Navel Vehicle until 1989. On retirement it was moored in the James River near the east coast of Virginia. In early 2002 it was towed to its current location for sinking. Interestingly, the ship began to sink a week before it was scheduled to be sunk and turned upside down. A salvage crew managed to sink the ship but it came to rest on its starboard side until Hurricane Dennis righted it.
