2018-05-26 - Cas Thomas House Reef (11 Steps), Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

17.3m - 38 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

Our first dive of this trip. This is our own private dive site - it is off the private beach of where we are staying, Cas Thomas. We are renting a guest apartment in an oceanfront villa and we are the only ones here. It was a fairly long swim to the reef. After the sandy bottom, there was a bunch of fire coral, then a bunch of grogonians, and then the drop-off. It was a beautiful reef - we will explore more later

22.8m - 38 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

There was a very long difficult swim to get to the reef. The reef started at around 40ft. The reef was nice but maybe not worth the long swim. I saw trumpet fish, trunkfish, and a large trigger fish.

19.9m - 35 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was a good dive - we saw a lot of cool things. We saw a barracuda swimming along the reef, a scorpion fish, a sea turtle, to white spotted file fish, and a large cowfish. There were also large schools of small silver fish. One school engulfed me during the safety stop and there was another one as we were getting out of the water with a couple bonefish hanging around.

2018-05-28 - Red Slave, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

23.5m - 31 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

The entry and exit for this dive was very difficult - there were large waves and a strong current on the sandy part. Once we got to the reef though, there was no current and it was a great dive! Almost immediately after reaching the reef we saw a sea turtle going up for air and a spotted eagle ray. There were several large puffers and black durgeons, which I haven't seen on Bonaire before. There were large schools of school master snappers and a large group of goatfish grazing on the safety stop I saw a lizardfish towards the end of the dive.

2018-05-28 - Karpata, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

23.5m - 49 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This morning we did point to point - we started the day with the southern-most dive site, Red Slave, and our second morning dive was the northern-most site without entering the park, Karpata. Karpata is a beautiful reef with finger structure. We saw a sea turtle, a scorpion fish, file fish and a lettuce sea slug.

2018-05-28 - Punt Vierkant, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

17.5m - 51 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

There is construction all around this dive site so we wanted to do it now - not sure if it will be accessible in the future. This was a great dive! It looked like a coral restoration area - there were little patches of stag horn coral on the way out to the reef. We saw a large green moray eel swimming along the reef, two barracuda, four arrow crabs, and after saying on dive 92 that I never saw black durgeons in Bonaire, we saw several on this dive. I also saw a flat crab with a body the size of a saucer but it went under a rock before I could get a really good look.

2018-05-29 - Aquarius, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

27.3m - 46 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was a great dive. It is a double reef. We swam out to the second reef and saw a moray eel swimming along the reef. I also saw several black durgeons on the second reef - they're definitely not as uncommon in Bonaire as I thought. The sandy area between reefs was filled with garden eels. The first reef had so many fish it was like being in an aquarium. We saw a juvenile queen angel close to the shore.

2018-05-29 - Salt Pier, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

12.6m - 55 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

Salt Pier is always a great dive. We saw several large green parrotfish and a couple of file fish that may have been in a territory dispute. We also saw two spotted eagle rays. One of them was using his nose to shovel through the sand looking for food. We were able to follow it around while it was eating for quite awhile.

18.9m - 37 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This dive was only ok. We ended it because we got bored. The reef wasn't that great - a lot of rubble. I did see a hamlet, which I haven't seen before here. Also saw filefish, an arrow crab, and some shrimp

2018-05-29 - Cas Thomas House Reef (11 Steps), Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

10.9m - 33 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was our first night dive of the trip and our third overall. We were a little nervous since this was our first night dive alone. We set up a beacon on the top of the reef so navigation was ok. We saw a couple chain moray eels. The best part was seeing a couple big tarpons. One was hunting a school of small silver fish. I got too focused on that, that I stopped paying attention and starting ascending without realizing and Justin had to get my attention to get me to come back down. We had to cut the dive short because Justin got stung by something.

2018-05-30 - The Lake, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

30.6m - 39 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was Justin's 100th dive and it was a great one! The reef structure was really interesting - it was shaped like a horseshoe. At the top of the horseshoe there were smaller coral heads that looked like a great spot for a night dive. We went down to 100ft to commemorate Justin's 100th dive. We saw two large green moray eels and a group of pompano feeding in the same. This was a great dive overall - a cool reef with a lot of life.

2018-05-30 - Invisible, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

23.5m - 49 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was my 100th dive and it was another great spot. On the swim out to the reef we saw two flounder, patches of tube worms, and fields of garden eels. The reef structure was cool - it was a double reef with sections of it split up by sandy channels. There were a lot of fish on this dive - chromas, small purple striped fish, and a bait ball above us - it felt like being in an aquarium. We also saw pompano, horse-eyed jacks, a big grouper, and a silver spotted fish with big eyes that neither Justin nor I have seen before. This was a great 100th dive!

2018-05-31 - Cas Thomas House Reef (11 Steps), Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

16.4m - 35 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was a pleasant morning dive! We used the leftover air from dive #98 so we started with only half a tank - a short and sweet dive. We saw bonefish and pompano on the swim out. On the reef we saw a flounder and a large spotted fish laying on the same that we thing may be in the grouper family. We also saw a large bait ball out in the blue with jacks swimming through it. This time Justin was too focused on it and started ascending and I had to call him down.

2018-05-31 - Bari Reef, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

22.9m - 42 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

We saw several cool things on this dive. Shortly after getting in the reef we saw a sea turtle, a barracuda, and a sharp tail eel. We also saw a chain moray and a big crab - maybe the same as on dive 94. The current was kind of strong here. It took us quite awhile to swim out but only a few minutes to drift back.

2018-05-31 - Weber's Joy, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

19.1m - 46 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was a very pretty roof. It could have been a great dive except we didn't really see anything too interesting. The best things we saw were and ocean triggerfish, a few filefish, some banded shrimp, and a couple hamlets. As we were getting out of the water there was a group of bonefish.

2018-06-01 - Margate Bay, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

25.3m - 40 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This was a very nice reef. For most of the dive we didn't really see anything too noteworthy until Justin found a sea turtle. It was chewing on some rock under some soft coral. We watched it for awhile. It swam off shortly after we did in the same direction so we got to swim with it for awhile. We also may have seen the same unknown fish as in dive #100.

2018-06-01 - Jeannie's Glory, Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

18.2m - 43 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

This dive was very similar to 104 - a pretty reef with nothing especially noteworthy until we came across a sea turtle chewing on some rock that we got to watch for awhile. This site is next to salt pier - we saw the ship's mooring buoy and we could hear the ship off in the distance. I saw a sharp tail eel just as I was coming out of the water.

2018-06-01 - Cas Thomas House Reef (11 Steps), Bonaire, Netherlands Antilles

24m - 37 min - Dived with Buddy Beach & Dive Resort

The last dive of this trip and we ended it on the same site we started on. There was nothing really noteworthy on this dive but on the whole, it's been a great house reef with a lot of bait balls and usually something interesting to see. I will miss having a private dive site!
