A bit unorganised and feeling a bit hung over -- wasn't my best dive!
Bare Island circumnavigation. I saw a giant sting ray and a lot of port jackson sharks. There was a huge school of catfish as well that were so densely packed that at first I thought it was seaweed!
Used a scooter for the first time!
I took the Go Pro with me this time and filmed the experience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCxrKcu2z18 I also used less weight than normal. I bought some halcyon weight pockets to use on this dive and didn't fix any weights to the tank this time. Instead I had 5 pound in each weight pocket and the usual 12 pounds on my BC. It worked very well! Maddy tried out Simon's BC for the first time and it worked really well, she said she was very comfortable.
Went for a dive with Maddy, Greg, Pieter and Greg's friend Ricky on the west end of bare island. The viz was terrible at first but improved later on. We went through a thermocline with a pretty big temperature drop of 23 down to 18 degrees. Felt the cold quite a bit from that. We saw a fiddler ray which I'd never seen before: http://australianmuseum.net.au/eastern-fiddler-ray-trygonorrhina-fasciata Spent a lot of time with the blue groper, as usual, although Maddy and Greg say there's actually 2 blue gropers in the area and one has a damaged dorsal fin. Swam with schools of fish, saw a number of nudibranchs, saw a toad fish and an octopus. Here's the footage of the dive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBSgAepSfWA
Tough dive. We entered on the south side of bare Island but the current was strong and visibility poor. We swam against the current to the west side of the island. It was exhausting. Maddy ran out of air and had to buddy breathe with me, which calmed her down a lot. We got footage of a cuttlefish acting defensively around a fish who was acting aggressively. Here's a video: https://youtu.be/-WmcmhTTR9E
Greg, Maddy and I went for a dive at the East side of Bare Island. This was the first time Maddy had tried using the gear she inherited from Simon after having it serviced. The vis was pretty poor, about 5 meters, but we saw a lot of great stuff. The highlight for me was seeing a small yellow box fish. It was adorable and I got some great footage of it. There was a giant cuttlefish, medium sized mourning cuttlefish and an octopus as well. Here's the footage from the gopro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0nUbRCriNWg
2016-03-27 - Bare Island West, Sydney, Australia
12m - 55 min - Dived with Greg Ryan
Greg, Maddy, Peter, Dorien and myself went diving on Easter Sunday. Clouds surrounded Bare Island before we got it, it was a beautiful sight. The viz was terrible though and I went diving without a light, which meant that I got lost a bunch of times. I was never too far from the group though because I'm familiar with the path we usually take. I filmed the dive but didn't focus on it. Lots of the shots were bad because I wasnt paying attention but the lighting was actually great under the water due to the bad weather outside the water. I played with an octopus and chased trigger fish mostly. Footage from the GoPro: https://youtu.be/ql_WJBV6O9w
This was my first dive using the Shearwater perdix and the Hog regs. It was excellent! The gear worked super well. Pieter, Greg, Maddy and I went exploring the further caves on the west side of bare island. We saw a mourning cuttlefish on the way, which pieter nearly mistook for a rock. We then saw an eastern blue devil fish, I got it on video but it didn't look terribly good in the end. Spent time with the blue groper was we got to the farther reaches of the dive before heading back and spending a bit of time with the Pygmy pipehorse that lives on one of the reefy rocks at the beginning of the dive.
I went with Greg to Bare Island but the visibility was incredibly poor because it was the week after the storms and floods. My body temperature dropped quite a bit in the water so I stopped trying to film anything and just hugged my chest instead. We made it out to the cave and turned around when the visibility turned even worse there. The way back was nicer, overall the fun of diving made it enjoyable but there was nothing to see.
