Dive Buddy: Adam Pierce I was going to do a Power Scuba meetup at shores, but then we discovered a massive 700+ person 10k swim relay was happening, so we tried to change venues to cove, but it ended up looking pretty choppy and washed out. So I drove over to Marine Room and did my first dive with the Two Divers Below group! I got to buddy with Adam who runs the group and whose red Sola light and bracket I found in the sand on an earlier dive at Marine Room (Dive #17). It was a great turn out with 10 divers, two of which (Ben and Maggie) had just moved to San Diego from Virginia/Connecticut. We swam out to the first buoy and descended fairly close to the canyon heading north northwest. The first thing we ran into was the infamous barbwire jellyfish (though it was only a short chain) which Adam took as an opportunity to teach us the shorthand signal for danger (the middle finger!). We continued down to about 80ft where we spent most of the dive. I pointed out a large cluster of lobsters hiding under a clump of kelp along with an octopus in the sand for the group. We encountered a few egg-laden rock crabs, a limbering sheep crab, and another cluster of lobsters before coming to a garden of sea grass absolutely teeming with grass-covered crabs that would've been totally camouflage had they not been moving around so much! Adam signaled to turn the dive, so we started swimming up to the wall where I spotted a large octopus napping in a hole. Then Adam found another one. And another. And another! Definitely want to come back at night and see if those big guys are out hunting. Shallows were pretty murky, so we didn't see much before the final ascent.

Dive Buddy: Emily Strand Another night dive with an Ocean Enterprises bud! Emily showed me some nudibranchs, the coolest of which was a tiny opalescent one. Also saw quite a few spanish shawls and octopus as usual. Finally found some little juvenile horn sharks - they look like squeaky toys! Saw a couple sheep crabs. Emily also nearly had a shark run into her, which gave her a pretty big fright even though she thinks it might've been just a leopard shark. Saw a few thornback rays and a bigger horn shark on the swim in.

    Point Loma Kelp, San Diego

Dive Buddies: Emily Strand, Sam Smith Finally back in the water after a week or so of bronchitis! And what better way to return than on a boat with my two favorite dive buddies. We decided to check out the Point Loma Kelp Beds with Waterhorse. We took the smaller boat, the Camarao, since there were only 4 of us (6 including the captain, Charles, and dive master, Jade). It was very cold out on the ocean! And the boat did not have hot water, hot shower, or a bathroom like the Humboldt :( On the ride out, we spotted a massive swarm of pelicans, seagulls, and dolphins breaching along with a few sea lions. The captain surmised that there was a large bait ball of sardines or mackerel that they were feasting on. After circling it for a minute, we continued South along Point Loma. The first dive was in a spot called Frankie's Forest. We anchored on the southern edge and descended right off the back of the boat using a massive kelp stalk as a visual guide. Right below the boat was a nice little rock covered in strawberry anemones, moon snails, sea cucumbers, massive purple urchins, and a variety of small nudibranchs. Emily was in absolute heaven! We spent about 15 mins just circling that one rock before exploring northwest a bit. We saw a few lobsters and tons of sheepshead, but didn't get too far before I hit turn pressure. We were using the boat-provided low pressure AL80s and my air consumption was pretty poor from being cold and after being sick (I was coughing a lot underwater from breathing the dry air). We headed back the way we came and ascended to our safety stop. Sam wanted to try out inflating his SMB, which he did from almost 50 ft and the reel ended up getting tangled on his first stage and a kelp stalk, so I had to help him get untangled, but it wasn't a huge ordeal. We still ended up surfacing right next to the boat. And I was happy to have made it back with exactly reserve pressure!

Dive Buddies: Amera Bishop, Ben Tagalong dive with Amera from OE and her friend Ben from Jiu-Jitsu class. Visibility in the shallows was fantastic, but there wasn't a huge amount of life. Went to the canyon which saw a drop in viz and we went north. Ben kept stopping to take pictures so I practiced my bubble rings and helicopter spins. Took lots of footage of my buddies since there wasn't much wildlife happening.
