Diver's Notes

Dive Buddy: Ryan Vandever

First dive of the wreck diver class with Mark and Eddie "The Dream Team" back again! First boat dive as well, via Waterhorse Charters. We went to the UMCS Yukon first which was an easy 15 minute ride from their shop in Mission Bay. The boat was a little tight with such a big class plus a few recreational divers on board. Weights, steel LP 85 tanks (~2400 psi), snacks, coffee, (cold) soup, and (hot) showers provided. We tied up to the mooring above the main guns of the Yukon (slightly forward of midships).

I was buddied up with Ryan and entry was from the back of the boat via giant stride. After regrouping by the mooring, Ryan and I descended second, directly after Mark and Eddie, all the way to the guns. Visibility opened up around 40 ft and the wreck was a vast landscape of barnacle-crusted, rusty metal, stretching off into the distance in either direction and laying on its port side.

We swam as a class down the deck, following Mark across the sand towards the stern of the wreck. We didn't get very far before Ryan signaled that he had reached turn pressure of 1600 psi. Mark turned us around and we headed back the way we came. Upon reaching the mooring, Mark signaled towards a nearby bulkhead facing upwards which we got closer to and took a peek inside. Once we got a good look with our lights, we descended up the line to 15 ft to complete our 3 minute safety stop.

As soon as we surfaced and gave the crew the OK, I heard the hissing of air coming from Ryan's tank valve. It seemed he had a leak which would explain his short bottom time. After boarding the boat, the crew decided to try him on a different regulator for the next dive.

I got some great footage of this mammoth wreck and I'm excited to go back tomorrow!
