Dive Buddy: Ryan Vandever

After debriefing the Yukon, we took a quick ride over to our next wreck: the Ruby E. This Canadian shipwreck was a bit shallower and a bit smaller than the Yukon. It had also been sunk 10 years earlier, so the hull was more brittle and penetration was not recommended.

Seth was leading this dive with Eddie and Mark taking one buddy pair to practice using dive tables since one of their dive computers was not functioning. Entry was much the same as the Yukon, giant stride from the swim step at the rear of the charter, regroup by the mooring, and descend in buddy pairs.

This time we descended upon the bow of the ship, followed Seth down its port side to about midships where the tower had listed off to starboard. There was a large opening to the galley which Seth demonstrated descending into a short way before coming back up. Next we checked the tower and then returned to the bow mooring where we ascended again for our safety stop.

In the chaos of all the students, I realized I had lost track of Ryan, but found him again all the way up the line doing his safety stop. When we surfaced, I again heard a hissing from his tank valve and he said he was low on air which is why he hurried back up. Hopefully he can get that fixed before tomorrow's dives!

Despite the short bottom time, conditions were great for my first two wrecks and I'm excited to come back tomorrow!
