Diver's Notes

Wainilu is basically just off a beach (not a beach dive though). Its a sloping reef. This site not for corals. There was a lot of dead coral branches, especially higher up on the slope. So we all took our macro gear out.
Saw some great small critters. First time I saw a Malibe nudibranch, which is actually quite huge, maybe 30-40cm long. It has this huge mouth that unfolds and then collapses on top of whatever it's doing. The creature looked amazing, like stuff Sci-fi films are made of!
The dive was quite cold at the lower end, and I kinda missed my sharkskin gear, but since this was our last full dive day, I wanted that stuff to dry (plus wasn't expecting it to drop to 25degC). It was still a nice dive despite the cold water.
I saw this little squid that gave me some awesome shots!
I also spotted a picturesque and got some passable shots of that one. Someone else constantly got too close chasing it off so I couldn't really get a good position or shot. A picturesque is basically family of the mandarin fish. Very colourful, and basically green with orange rings, beautiful.

One of the divers had a bit of a disappointing dive though. Her camera case opened up under water and basically flooded, killing the camera. The lesson learned here was to always check your gear. Personally, once I finish a dive, I immediately prepare my camera for the next dive completely, lock the case and check it's working properly, so I don't end up with empty batteries or leaking seals. This person had left the camera half open, intending to finish it off later. Then when it was time to dive, the diver just grabbed the camera, and as it happened it was partially closed, enough to appear fully closed. result: dead camera. On the less negative side, it was the end of the trip, the diver had a second camera and this camera set was pretty cheap. Disappointing but not a complete disaster.
