Diver's Notes

Awesome!!! rolling backward off the side of a boat in the middle of Sydney Harbour at nearly 1am, floating around in the black water watching your fins light up the phosphorescence in the water, a light show only bettered by the city skyline; time to find the TSS Currajong!

Ascending down the anchor line 5, 10, 15 meters still blackness, 20 meters and from the milky darkness there she is in our torch light - sleeping for just over a century, unknown to most that pass overhead everyday.

40mins later and it was time to leave... still so much to discover - guess I will be back.

Favourite part was the bow of the boat - you can see it in the attached profile extending up around the 25min mark from 24 to 16mtrs - an 8mtr tower of sponge and coral gardens, with decorator crabs that were very unsure of what to make of us and our bright lights. (I will admit to having a little titanic moment "I'm the king of the world!" - although my buddy I think was quite confused as to what I was doing).

I was very surprised to see clumps of sun coral - still in my estimate only a year or so old under the stern. I would have though the water was too cold - however I guess this could be made up for with the added nutrient rich water from Sydney Harbour.

This dive is done in the middle of the night as it is in a ferry / shipping channel and it is not legal to anchor without permission - permission is only given by pre-arrangement and after the last Manly ferry. I would like to do it as a shore dive in the day before doing again at night.

Abyss did a great job arranging this dive - well worth doing at least a few times.
