2004-11-30 - Mala Wharf, Maui, Hi, United States

9.1m - 47 min - Dived with Lahaina Divers, Inc.

Dove w/Lahaina Divers, kind of cattle herder, but good. 1st of 8 planned dives Jill's first dive in 3 years My first dive in 2.5 years Mala wharf is an old collapsed wharf that is now basically a reef. Old pilings, rebar, concrete slabs, very cool. Jill had problems descending with a leaky mask, but other than that descents were ok. Mike was trying out a disposable reusable camera. Hopefully the pics turn out. Saw 3 greenback turtles, large 4+ feet long, one resting under a crevice. Jill and other divers saw a shark (~4 feet long), but Mike missed the shark. Quite a few fish. Cigar shaped yellow thing (probably a nudibranch) Mike saw a yellow, white, and black worm-type thing. Took a pic, will try to ID later. 13 people on boat + 4 crew, 4 in our dive group. Saw a very rare frog fish, pointed out by dive master. Looked like a leaf, would not have known it was a fish. This was a very good dive. What would you do differently: dive more frequently.

2004-11-30 - Jodo Mission, Maui, Hi, United States

10.4m - 44 min - Dived with Lahaina Divers, Inc.

Jodo Reef Maui North of Lahaina, south of Papakea Across from biggest buddha in western hemisphere, just out from mala wharf. 2nd dive of day on Jodo Reef, just a few minutes from Mala Wharf Reef was very nice, but not much life, kind of a boring dive overall. Did see one turtle at end, surfacing. Saw a multi-colored urchin-y thing (ID from pic, hopefully), either expelling eggs or waste. Got to explore on our own at the end. Saw large sea cucumber. Met nice newlywed British couple Kristen & Mahamet. She is swiss and they live in London. He does network engineering independently. She is a product manager for Swatch. We had dinner with them a few nights later.

Saw: - Crown of thorns stars - lots feeding on coral - eggs of the spanish dancer - a couple moray eels Decent dive, Jill says it was underwhelming Really liked John the divemaster - he gave an excellent briefing. Seas got really rough while we were under. Surge came up below too. Lots of time to explore on our own at the end. British couple on boat again. With Lahaina Divers

2004-12-07 - Cathedrals 1, Hawaii Lanai, United States

18.3m - 40 min - Dived with Lahaina Divers, Inc.

Twilight dive to orient for night dive. Another great dive location! 5 of 8 dives w/Lahaina Divers. Our dive guide was Todd, he is kind of mediocre. John from last dive was better. Jill had problems clearing her ears. First cathedral is a large underwater lava/rock formation you can swim inside. Lots of life, lots of coral. 1 large moray eel, out in open 1 small eel in coral 1 tiny crab in coral

2004-12-09 - Molokini Crater, Hawaii Maui, United States

21.6m - 38 min - Dived with Lahaina Divers, Inc.

Great dive! Probably best of trip. #25 for Jill Definitely best for sea life. -eels, garden eels in sand - 1 white-tipped reef shark - many very large trevali, up from the depths - jill saw a moray - Lots of fish - 1 huge ray at end, after I was out of film. Did great with buoyancy and ear clearing My flash for the camera died, so not sure how pics will be Trick from "water & light" book for clearing seems to work: start clearing every 5 minutes an hour before the dive. Next time try 12 pounds.
