Diver's Notes

Jill 69. Annika 6 (I think 5 training + this dive). We all got in the water, and. Annika seemed fine when we hit the water. My weight at 12 lbs was fine. Jill took a little while to get down with her ears, but was then fine. We went under, and Annika seemed ok at first, though she seemed to be struggling with her mask. I helped her adjust it and showed her how to clear it better, and that seemed to help. Then she start fiddling with her rental fin (she had been offered Jill's fins on the boat, but turned them down in favor of the rental fins - we should have insisted she use Jill's fins). About 10 or 15 minutes into the dive, she started heading slowly toward the surface. I got her attention and coaxed her back down. She appeared to be crying under her mask. I again helped her clear her mask and I also readjusted her fins. She was ok for a few more minutes, but kept messing with her fin. I then suggested that she and Jill switch fins and got Jill's attention. This was a mistake. We got the first fin from Jill and Annika got it on, but while attempting to put on Annika's fin, Jill drifted toward the surface and ended up surfacing. Then the divemaster surfaced and was unhappy with Jill (she told me later). Then Annika surfaced. I waited a few and then decided to go up as well. Jill dropped her fin, which started descending towards the bottom, so I went down to get it for her (twice). Eventually, Jill put her own fins back on, Annika put her fins back on, and then we went down again. The divemaster had told Annika he would guide her back to the boat underwater and then let her go up. We did this right away.

After Annika left we did finally see a turtle at the very end, and I think we also saw an eel at one point and a cool purple dragon nudibranch again, but the boat had to leave to so we got called up early. I did well on this dive overall and remained calm and helpful, but I made a semi-serious mis-judgement when I asked Annika and Jill to switch fins. It was a bad idea for both of them and not worth it. Better to have just let Annika work it out with the dive master. I remained calm and kept Annika under and safe, but I made an error in attempting the fin swap. Lesson learned for next time - don't switch gear with inexperienced divers and don't switch gear unless necessary.

I gave the dive master a big tip for having to deal with us.
