2012-05-10 - Molokini Backwall, Maui, Hi, United States
21.3m - 33 min - Dived with Matt from Prodiver Maui Or Ultra Dive
Molokini Back Wall - interesting current that was pushing us up and down. Wall was beautiful, but no significant critters. Not that comfortable on this first dive. Found giant lobster and Joe hopefully got photos. Joe kept getting in front of me with his camera. He says I can hit him if he does it again. ProDiver was great. Matt was the dive master and he was awesome, and the driver Paul was good. Getting to Kihei at 5:45am sucked as usual though.
2012-05-10 - Pu'u Olai (Red Hill), Hawaii Maui, United States
15.5m - 44 min - Dived with Matt from Prodiver Maui Or Ultra Dive
Red Hill - over by Little Beach off Wailea. Followed current over to Little Beach. Matt found an octopus, that Joe almost missed because he was messing with his camera below Matt. Octopus inked all over the place. Matt let it go, and it joined a 2nd octopus, they both fled next to a rock, Joe and I followed, and the original octopus changed color to match the rock, and became almost invisible. In the first part of the dive (prior to Octopi siting), we found a turtle cleaning station, and saw them covered with cleaner fish. There was a very cool lava arch swim through on this dive with two sizable turtles. This was a great dive site, and want to go back here and go to Little Beach when Jill and I go to Wailea. I found a banded eel, which started my run of finding eels.
2012-05-11 - Cathedrals 2, Hawaii Lanai, United States
17.7m - 35 min - Dived with Chris from Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Cathedrals II - Older woman had massive troubles descending, because she was underweighted. Later in the dive she lost her weight belt and went to the surface and exited. Chris (blonde long-haired dude) was our dive master, and he was awesome as usual. Elliot was our boat captain and he was funny as usual too. The cathedral was great, and the chandelier was beautiful. Joe missed the chandelier because no one was there to point it to him. Lava formations were beautiful. Was looking at the site with new eyes seeing it with Joe and U-man. Joe and U-man are amazing on their air. I was at 1100 lbs and U-man was still 1600lbs. All of us were doing great on the dives. I got really lucky finding eels on the whole trip, starting with dive and finding a very sizable eel.
2012-05-11 - Menpachi Cave, Hawaii Lanai, United States
16.8m - 30 min - Dived with Chris from Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Menpachi Cave - The older woman was properly weighted this time, so had no problems, which was nice. Did the 70+ foot lava tube swim through and saw an overhead nook with at least a dozen lobsters in it. Chris wrote "that was a lot of lobsters". Prior to that there was another overhead nook with a bunch of shrimp. I found an eel in a nook with a cleaner shrimp right next to it. Was a highlight for Joe. We also swam through a lava formation with a small piece of sailboat ballast, and the formation was featured in an episode of the original Charlie's angels series. The nice thing about these 2 dives, was that since there were 3 of us, Chris would cut us loose towards the end near the boat and we could cruise around on own. Since Joe and Mike were better on their air than me, they could stay down even after I had to ascend, so their dives were significantly longer than mine. I need to get better on my air!
2012-05-11 - Jodo Mission, Maui, Hi, United States
10.7m - 48 min - Dived with Chris from Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Jodo Mission - this was only so-so dive on the whole trip. Did see some turtles, a couple of them quite close to us, but lots of sediment stirred up, so visibility was not thrilling. I was going to point out a cool nudibranch to Joe, but he waved me over to show me a plastic bottle. Bastard! I found one yellow margin morey eels which was nice. Chris thought we knew what we were doing, so he said we could just do whatever we wanted. We opted to follow the group at a distance, so we wouldn't get lost, but we did our own thing nearby.
2012-05-11 - Mala Wharf, Maui, Hi, United States
9.1m - 52 min - Dived with Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Mala Wharf - I was hoping we would do this dive and it was even better than I remember. Elliot said we should abide by the "Sharp and Pointy Rule" on this dive - "if it looks sharp and pointy, then it probably is." We were allowed to go off on our own along the wharf. It was really fun to swim through all the fallen pieces of concrete. Several turtles throughout the dive, including some sizable ones under concrete arches. Saw couple of eels. Great dive, would love to do this one again. Found 2 imperial nudibranchs engaged in suspicious behavior that may have been mating.
2012-05-12 - Fish Rain, Hawaii Molokai, United States
15.8m - 43 min - Dived with Chris from Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Fish Rain, Mohukooniki Rock, Molokai. Boat crossing was fine and the entry and exits were not difficult. There were 3 people on the boat that had elaborate rebreather apparatuses, and we dropped them in the water before us. They came up during our 2nd dive, so were under for a couple hours or more. Saw a single hammerhead twice just a few minutes into the dive. It might have been 2 hammerheads, but not really sure. Other than that, this was a nice relaxing dive, even though we spent most of our time out in the blue with our "heads on a swivel" looking for hammerheads. Did see 1 Eagle Ray far below us towards the end of the dive. I stayed about 20 feet above the group, so that I did not run through my air too fast. Chris was our dive master again, which was great, and Jared was driving the boat, and I remember him from last time.
2012-05-12 - Fish Rain, Hawaii Molokai, United States
13.7m - 45 min - Dived with Chris from Lahaina Divers, Inc.
Fish Rain, again - this time we started over the reef where we found a few bombs from world war II, which they had told us to look out for and they showed us one embedded in the rock above the water line. Also found a nudibranch with scientific name pseuoceros ferrugineous, you can see him here http://www.wetwebmedia.com/hiinverts2.htm. (need to find common name), but he was purple with a yellow rim and was cruising around on a rock next to an old bomb. Saw a fleeting glimpse of a hammerhead in the distance toward the end of the dive when we swam out into the blue. The reef was the best part of this dive, very pretty and lots of critter, and I found a sizable yellow margin morey eel, thus continuing my eel streak.
