Diver's Notes

Drift dive with Gareth, starting near Seal Bay off Dalkey Island. We were instructed to keep 330º bearing, which exactly matched direction of the current. Current was not too strong, but steady enough to get us flying. Shortly we left reef and there was only sandy bottom with loads of Hermit crabs and snails with not much else to see.
45 min into the dive I decided to deploy DSMB for safety stop and end the dive. Safety stop was completed and when we surfaced, we were surprised how far we got. We were almost half way back to Dun Laoghaire, boat was nowhere to be seen. Surge was getting stronger and we were a bit worried that we might spend some time in choppy conditions before we get collected. Shore was not too far, about 0.5 km away and we considered the option of shore exit, but the shore was very rocky with steep cliffs, so with these conditions exit would have been extremely difficult.
Then we spotted Ocean Voyager circling around near horizon, obviously looking for us. We tried our best to make ourselves visible and eventually boat was approaching.
When we got into the boat, we learned that we were the only ones from the group who actually got into the current, while everybody else were staying in the reef, we enjoyed our drift dive. Willie was just minutes away from calling the CoastGuard for the search.
