Diver's Notes

Initial plan was to dive as 3 groups of 2 (Ronan with Mark Dunne, Sami with Amjad and Adam with me), but keeping all together if possible. Initial descent proved very bad visibility. Barely could see more than 0.5 metres. There was no possibility to see who is where and we resurfaced to discuss a new plan.
Sami and Amjad called the dive and started swimming back to the harbour. The rest of us continued in the same groups, but no all together.
During descent we could not see a thing, and eventually we reached the bottom at around 15m depth, which was unexpectedly sandy (hoped to see boulders and rocky bottom as per previous dives in the same location). On top of that, the bottom was moving quite rapidly, which meant we were in a current. I tried to figure out on the compass which way it is carrying us, but it was difficult to see and I thumbed the dive to see where we are. On the surface we were surprised how far we were carried. I could see the sillouette of Dalkey Island and harbour was really far. I told Adam that we are not doing safety stop and heading back to harbour immediately.
After long swim we realized that we are not moving towards harbour at all, and possibly we are taken further away from it. Intensive finning made my legs tired, I also used my arms to get better propulsion. Shortly I decided to get close to the rocks for possibility to climb out or at least use it as an aid for swimming. Adam stayed away from the rocks, but was nearby.
This way we made some progress, although not easy, but we ended up much closer to the harbour. It took significant time to swim and I was worried that my battery can go flat and a few times I had it switched of to save power in case if we stay in the water for much longer time. I occasionally flashed my lights towards harbour to let them know where we are.
Soon after we heard a boat approaching, which was RLNI lifeboat coming to rescue us.
Once back to the harbour, we had told Coast Guard what happened and after quick health check were released.
