Diver's Notes

First of two planned night wreck dives. No currents, good visibility for conditions. Started dive with 12 pounds of weight.

During descent on the line, noticed decent was slower compared to usual, did not think anything of it. Reached the wreck and started to explore around. Around the middle of the ship, my weight belt slipped off I grabbed it just in time but not before losing one weight to the bottom.

I put the weight belt back on and started to ascend. I signaled to my dive partner, Nathan as he was pointing out an eel. When Nathan tried to signal the other divers, they thought he was pointing out another interesting sight.

Was struggling to maintain depth and I lost orientation. I swam opposite to the rising bubbles. The other divers grabbed a hold of me and attempted to pull me down, and I released all the air from my BC. I remember thinking to myself, "This is how I die." Fortunately, I remained calm during the ordeal and was able to acknowledge commands from the divemaster.

Once we wee able to get a hold of the line, made the best attempt to conduct a controlled ascent tot he surface while performing a pseudo safety stop.

Upon reaching the surface, noticed the BC was fully inflated again. In the adrenaline rush at the surface, I lost my mask and snorkel on the surface swim back to the boat.

Through inspection of equipment conducted. There was some sand in the BC inflation valve that had the valve inflating slowly enough to become problematic, but too slow for detection.
