First dive of the day. I claimed my free birthday dive with Dive Oahu. I normally partner up with someone I know, but in this case I only knew the boat captain, Neil.
There were 5 divers, including myself, and an instructor to lead the dives but we had flexibility to meander from the group.
My "dive buddy" doesn't dive too often, he is an airline pilot on a layover. We discussed the basic dive plan for the Sea Tiger and agreed that I would show him some of the points of interest.
We got into the water and descended, for some reason the group decided to shotgun it to the bottom. My partner did not have a computer that he was keeping track of.
I got him to follow me and our average depth was in the 90s. When I was pushing the deco limit, I proceeded to take him to the wheelhouse where it was slightly higher. When I turned aorund to signal our intent, I found him back on the bottom taking pictures of the fish!
I knew deco limits were violated already so I descended as far as my computer would let me and I signaled that the dive was over. After a little "argument" under the water he finally followed me to the line. His justification for nt wanting to go was that he still had 1500psi left for air.
When we reached the line, we started our ascent and he broke contact with the line and started to drop again to take pictures of an eagle ray. I urged him to abort the dive; 30 seconds longer I was seriously considering ascending without him.
To err on the side of caution, I stopped at 80' for about 3 minutes; 50' for 3 minutes; and safety stop for 5 minutes. He was rushing to surface; I had to physically restrain him from ascending. Two minutes into the safety stop, I had to pull him down because he was already up to 5 feet.
Great day for a dive with excellent conditions, but this just proves that "dive buddies" can break what would have otherwise been a great dive.
