Diver's Notes

The rectangular structure rests on a rise in a sparse patch of sand and rocks. A row of rusted iron railings at the southern end has a circling school of grunts and snappers that at times block the view of the barge. Lobsters and morays peek out along the pitted base. And a goliath grouper roams the outside greeting divers before he slips inside and hides in the shadows.

Spearman's barge is a little bit of a deeper dive at around 80 feet. I was the 2nd in and we all went in negative. I didn’t handle my equalization procedure well and had to ascend a few feet here and there as I went down to fix my ears so I ended up blowing over the rest of the group as well as the barge and spent the rest of the dive alone on the seafloor. I normally stay and hover just above the seabed so I am at the full 80 feet whereas the other divers tend to hover about 5 to 7 feet over the floor. This allows those divers to have a longer no-deci time than I would because they're always at a slightly shallower depth. It amazes me the difference that a few feet makes when you're diving. The seafloor where I was was relatively featureless though it wasn't just sand. There was a decent amount of ocean life which kept my interest and made for items that could be videotaped on my go Pro. I'm trying to get into the ability to identify the different ocean species when I go diving so the go Pro makes it easier as I can go back and figure out what this species name is later. I hovered along the bottom allowing the current to whisk me along until my no-deco time got down below 10 minutes and I started to ascendant at that point. When I got to my 15 foot safety stop I deployed my safety sausage. After three minutes at 15 feet I surface and the boat swung around to pick me up.
