Diver's Notes

The Bluffs, Seas 1-3 Vis 60 Temp 76

It was rough seas on the way out to the Jack location in my stomach got pretty queasy. We started out our first dive at a location called the Bluffs. I started out being very social and talking to everybody on the boat but as my stomach be Kmart queasy I got more quiet trying to focus on not getting more sick. It's seem to take forever to get out to the dive location. I Donda all of my equipment and sat down at the 10 minute mark and that is when I started getting really sick. Fortunately I entered the water before I got to nauseated and felt immediate relief. I was diving with a bunch of professional people so they got off the boat and entered the water very quickly as deadeye. I had gotten rid of all the air and my BC so I went directly to the bottom and shoring that I was equalizing my ears all the way. My nausea immediately went away.

I was diving at about 75 feet and, since I was driving on air I only had a bottom time of 30 minutes. The sea life down there was quite incredible and I drop down exactly on the location I was supposed to. It is basically a reef ledge about 15 feet high paralleling the shore from north to south. There was an immense amount of sea life down there though more the tiny fish than the larger pelagic's. I pulled out my go Pro on a POV stick and found the intermittently. The most interesting thing I saw however was a bout a 3 to 4 foot turtle digging and they have the seabed over top of one of the ledges. I was also amazed by the diverse and vivid colors of the coral ledge even at that deep location. Usually you lose the colors by the time you passed 60 feet but, even at 75 feet, the colors were pretty vibrant. On the go Pro I had attached the red filter that Dave had purchased during his trip to Australia. The fish seem to be a little more approachable and not as afraid and I saw a huge schools of baitfish hiding in the ledges. The area was fun also because they were quite a few trenches and crevices that you could explore. I was enjoying testing my buoyancy control also as I was hovering just a few feet above the ocean floor.

My air was still pretty full when I reach the 30 minute mark so I simply sent it about 15 feet which gave me an additional 15 minutes of bottom time. I was enjoying drifting along with the current watching from above. In about 40 minutes I started my sent and deployed the surface marker buoy at about 20 feet. It was an improper deployment though as I actually drop the spool but fortunately caught it. I was doing all this while simultaneously attempting to not go above my 15 foot safety stop depth. I ended up getting the situation under control and finished a send them to the surface where two of the other divers join to me so they would not have to deploy their SMB. It was a couple of minutes before the boat came around and picked us up. The seas were about 3 to 4 foot waves though the frequency was pretty tight making the surface quite active. Boarding the boat was interesting and I was back on taking all my equipment off.
