Diver's Notes

The first dive was on Norman Reef at the “Plate Top” dive location. We had our dive briefing on the topmost area of the “Sea Quest” at 1030am which included about 20 divers. It was my first dive on the GBR so Louise and I chose to have a guide with us who was Lani a young pretty blond girl. In our group with Lani was Myself, Louise, Jeanne and Salvadore. We were assigned equipment and a safety number (mine was 3) during the dive briefing. Jeanne was an american contractor living in Burma for a technology company and Salvatore was an Italian Lawyer living in Sicily. They were all great people and fun to be with.

We all got setup with our equipment and suited up for the dive. The equipment was a bit worn but not surprisingly so. I was feeling a bit queasy from the ride out but just ignored it. We all splashed in at 1055am and followed Lani out into the waters. There was only a very mild current and the experience was magical. I just took in the experience from the beginning keeping and eye on both Lani and Louise, My dive buddy. Louise was a bit of a heavy breather so she wasn’t able to sustain more than 30 minutes of dive time. I was in about 45 minutes and had a maximum depth of 16.4 meters with a bottom time of 42 minutes.

Everything here in Australia is in metric so I had to get used to the different units of measure which was even more important diving. The tank capacity was measured in BAR instead of pounds/Inch2 but it wasn’t that big of a deal as we weren’t diving deal and I wasn’t that far from the boat at any one time.
