Diver's Notes

SS Margit, Malta

Winds blowing again today so we took a bit of a gamble and went for a dive in the middle of the grand harbour. Required a manic drive through the centre of town, a change in a regatta club car park, a surface swim out through a busy leisure port and diving under the shopping channel.

What awaited us in the bottom was by UK standards a really cracking wreck. Lots of wreckage around the stern section but swim-thrus in the forward section. Clearly a very silty bottom (as demonstrated by the goatfish munching their way through the seabed!). The one bizarre thing about the wreck was that it felt very like a decent UK dive but had the usual Mediterranean fish on hand.... damsel fish, grouper and Nessa spotted a wonderfully colored nudibranch too.

On top of the swim-thrus we also found the engine and intact prop shaft running aft.
When we'd had half an hour on the wreck and were getting a bit cold decided to swim back towards our entry point. On the way we found all sorts of the usual harbour detritus including apparently the HMS Abingdon! As we worked our way back roughly in the right direction, it was lovely feeling the temperature increase. And can you believe our luck when we turned up literally on the ladder that we had entered the water on! Underwater nav skills have reached fever pitch!
