Diver's Notes

Um El Faroud, Malta

Heard a lot of chat about this wreck before we’d got in. Some people claiming that it was the best wreck in the Med. It didn’t turn out to be quite that standard but I’d definitely say the best shore-based wreck dive I’ve done in the Med.

The wind was being a bit of a pain and scheduled to get a lot worse so we hopped in fairly early and swam out to the site. Passed over the divers helmet statue that Atlam Divers had placed there some years ago. You first reach the stern section of the wreck which makes it looks imposing from the rudder up to the top of the superstructure in the lovely Maltese visibility. During this dive we mainly stayed outside the wreck but did a full lap around the wreck up to the bow and back again. You can see all the twisted metal around the wreck - some from the oil explosion that occurred in dock and also where it must have broken in two when it was scuttled.

Around the superstructure there is a lot of different fish swimming about; including about 4 barracuda hunting on the smallest in the groups. The wreck seems to be home to a lot of the pretty pink and white, and blue and white nudibranchs.

Finished our dive with Nessa feeling pretty scared of the barracuda but making it back to the inlet for our deco stop (had about 14 minutes in the end after making the most of our bottom time). Was a bit nerve wracking having the wacky boat drivers pinging around overhead.
