Diver's Notes

Blue Hole, Coral Cave and Big Bear, Gozo

Back over to the Blue Hole in the afternoon and managed to time it really well again such that we missed all the other divers! Our plan this time was to drop into the Coral gardens but return via the Blue Hole for our deco stops. Worked out well in the end but needed a fair old swim to get there!

After a short rummage through the coral gardens we dropped down through the ‘U’ shape and had a brilliant descent head first down to the bottom around 25m. On the way we spotted three more of those bizarre crab/lobster/woodlice things attached to the wall.... still a bit baffled by what they are!

At the bottom of the wall we quickly came to the Coral cave, which was very large. We took the advice and didn’t go near the second chamber but had a bit of skirt through the main cave looking at all the coral formations along the walls. Back out in the open water and we found ourselves moving over a large boulder field which was leading us to the Big Bear rock. Our original plan was to go around the rock and come back down the boulder lane between the rock and the mainland. However we couldn’t see a way through, were scared by the enormous protruding rock above the surface and had already had a bottom time of over 30mins.

So we decided to head back onto the 17m plateau on the side of the rock. Nice grassy section which had a very welcome thermocline on it. Then across the boulder pathway and across to the wall. This lead us to the top edge of the Coral cave which we passed over, past the U that we had entered in from. We then kept going around the promontory for what felt like a very long time.... not sure we were too convinced we would make it around to the Blue hole. But in the end we did.

Nessa was running low on gas and still had a fair bit of deco to do. So we got out my 2m hose ;-) and finished our deco looking at all the lovely little anemones and coral along the archway that makes up the blue hole. Lovely dive but both very tired and cold after the dive. A ‘99 with flake’ soon solved that issue though!
