Diver's Notes

At the advice of the gentleman that runs Chez Amand we went back to this protected site for a night dive. As we arrived there was a group of Germans waiting around to jump in. They were surprised when we started to head in when it was still dusk but had already de-kitted by the time we came out. Was plenty dark enough for us though when we first got in.

Nessa clearly had some magic goggles on today as within little time she’d spotted a cuttlefish. Am always amazed by their motion and the way they can change colour and texture. Making our way over to the cave Nessa spotted another cuttlefish before spotting a brilliant looking orange octopus at the mouth of the cave at around 10m. We spent ages looking at him and took some photos.Think this proved a sign to Nessa that she should be brave and venture into the cave. Taking my arm we slowly moved our way up until the cave narrows to it’s single diver section and then turned around. Was strange coming back into the sandy bottom of the inlet without the wonderful blue light that we see from all the caves around here.

Then we moved north east over to the other side. By this time we had already reached our planned dive time of half an hour but we were having such fun and seemed like Ness was actually warm for a change so we continued at a similar pace across the sandy floor and the grassy edge of the site. Lots of nice little fish buzzing around everywhere but no sign of the flat fishes that we had seen so many of on our previous dive here (where do they all hide?!?).

On our way we came across a further cuttlefish whose underside glowed a fluorescent green when in our torch beams. He seemed pretty fascinated by us and looked like we wanted to come for a cuddle, following us around for a few minutes before settling down in the grassy bed.

Eventually made our way back to the shallows and clambered out of the water into a beautiful starry night. What a way to finish the day.... felt like 3 days in one, especially with having done some sightseeing at a World Heritage Site (Ggantija temples) in the afternoon. A good sleep is in order I think!
