Diver's Notes

After a long lunch, Joseph and I went back out with our extra cylinders. I wanted to explore the south wall a little further out; at least around the point toward the west wall. I also wanted to drop all of my weight just to see if I could still keep myself under. It worked! With no air at depths down to 20' (thermocline), I kept a great buoyancy, not needing to inflate but one puff, which I exhausted on our descent at the end. I could keep much better control using only my breath. I noticed that I planed off better, and used less air swimming.

Another adjustment I made was I loosened my cumberbund. I think that it was too tight yesterday and that it caused my issue with breathing for the first half of my last dive. That seemed to work as I could breath deeper without struggling, and thus could better control my breathing rate.

I noticed the further away from the common area we ventured, the fish acted noticeably different. The bass were a bit more skiddish, but the brim actually followed us for a long ways. A couple of times I turned to film them and they actually came up and attached my camera (using the term "attacked" loosely: they just nipped at the silver screws that holds my lens filter in place). One was especially "playful"; at one time he even swam up to my mask and looked at me for a second or two before swimming back a few feet. He followed us for a long way. Hopefully I got some pretty good, close-up shots. Also saw several bass, one very large and black in color.

At half-tank (around 1800 psi), we surfaced to see how far we had made it, and found ourselves just shy of the corner where the wall turns back north (west wall). There's a nice little shady cove and the water is very clear at the surface. We decided to mill around at the surface a bit instead of continuing the dive. We stayed about half-an-hour before descending and completing another dive on the same tank.
