Diver's Notes

Our planned dive site was the nearby French Reef. Upon arrival, Steve noted that the water was green (low vis), so we continued on to Molasses.

We tied off on mooring #3, near the Wench Hole. Our planned route took us over the reef to the Wench, then along the nearby channel to the ledge, and back around to the mooring line. On entry, Vince tied off his safety sausage so it would be easy to find our line.

The reef is unhealthy, but not as bad as French: most of the coral looks bleached or dead, but was not covered in algae to the same extent. Gorgonians were still intact and appeared to be holding on. The floor along the channel and in the Wench Hole had definitely been removed, but again not to the extent as it had been at French Reef.

I found a Peterson shrimp by chance, and saw a small reef shark just off of the small ledge. Toward the end of the dive near the same spot, Vince spotted two larger reef sharks swimming by.

We returned to the dock in the early afternoon. Our dinner plans included grilling fresh-caught Wahoo Vince had brought with him from his deep-sea fishing trip earlier in the week. Jen made a mango salsa and a salad, and we had Mrs. Mac's Key lime pie for dessert.
