Diver's Notes

Dive #3 of the 4 check-out dives. Today Joseph joined us. He and I stayed back behind the group, sweeping up. The first dive was a giant stride in from the dock, where we swam out to the platform buoy, then to the bus to review, then on to the "hoops" platform to do some emergency ascents. Billy led the ascents as Eric ran through some more buoyancy skills with the students. Joseph and I mulled around a bit. Went down to 25' to get a sample temp of the water. Feels cold, but is only 81 degrees! Also found some remains of a crawfish.

Went down with 2 pounds. Joseph wanted me to give them up to one of the students, but when I was going to, he was down and looked OK. Found out after the dive it was one of the girls that needed them, but she was fine. She had plenty of weight, but she's tense and has a hard time getting under. More skills/experience related issue more than weight. As it turned out, I needed the 2 lbs anyway: once my tank was nearing empty, I had to swim face down at an angle to keep from ascending. Nothing major, just noticeable. After the last ascent drill, we all surfaced. I didn't want to stay long enough to trip my computer, so I dove back down to about 5' under. I noticed I descended very slowly, and had to exhale deep to do it. Tank was half-empty by this point.

We swam out to the platform and back. Didn't see too much. Water seemed a little clearer today, until we kicked it up at the platform. Ed (at the gate) said a very large group of 200 or more were out this week (Friday, I think) and may have kicked up a lot of sediment that hadn't settled by yesterday. Could explain the difference. Still not good enough to film much, so I left the Go Pro behind.
