Diver's Notes

Five Fingers is part of The Elbow and is located a short distance from the Hannah M. Bell. The site derived its name from the alterntaing coral heads and sand channels that form long, skinny fingers running north to south. Thus, the dive plan is simple: slowly circumnavigate the corals working your way into the current before returning back to the boat. Alternatively, using a zig-zag pattern from one finger to the next while sheltering behind the leeward side of the coral ledges helps when the current is strong. We would opt for the latter today.

It was nice to see this reef in good shape still, especially the elkhorn adorning the tops of the reef. We saw a nice sized school of tangs, several lobsters, trumpetfish and a southern stingray.

I struggled keeping up with Jen in the current, partly because she swims fast and partly because I was using new Go Fins by ScubaPro. I like the fins because they are compact and have closed heel pockets, but they don't have a lot of power. Not to mention I am not in the best of shape. I noticed these issues on the first dive as well, and it was definitely impacting my SAC rate. So, while I decided to work on the latter for the long term, I asked Jen to slow down a bit for the next few dives. Though she doesn't do it often, I like when she leads because she's an excellent underwater navigator and can find things that I often miss.
