Diver's Notes

Check-out dive for Galapagos. Water was chilly, but stayed comfortable, even a bit warm in the 3mm wetsuit and hooded vest. The latter posed some issues with getting a proper seal around my mask, and also trapped air, but less so since I added the grommets for vent holes. Still uncomfortable diving with all of the layers. Jen felt the same, and we went up surfacing earlier than our 15 minute allowance. The visibility was not great; probably 10 feet at best. Bottom was relatively flat with large rocks/boulders strewn about. A few fish that I don't recall offhand, and lots of starfish and urchins: mostly pencil--these look like mines from WWII--but also spiny blue sea urchins. Not a very good dive overall: and most everyone agreed on that. But we discounted it as a check-out dive just to find out how we would do with our weight and equipment. I decided to shed the hooded vest, since I was plenty warm. This should help me reduce my weight significantly, though they only have increments of 4lb on board. (I think they like being a bit overweight due to the current: easier to get the group down and adjust underwater than have them float away on the surface!)
