Diver's Notes

Our second practice dive would run along the same route, but include the plane despite our underwater time and also use natural navigation to the rock crusher in lieu of taking a bearing. This would work by skirting along the wall immediately to the left of the entry point to the pipes that lead to the crusher. At that point, we would turn right and follow those until we found the structure. We started out well enough, but Jen missed the pipes at first. A quick correction and we were heading straight to the crusher. Jen was unaware of the distance and second guessed herself a couple of times, but we found it in time and then proceeded up the line to the bus. I was still feeling heavy, even though my tank was 1000 psi shorter than last (I used the same 120cf steel tank for the second dive that I had used for the first), so I stopped inside the bus to remove my BCD and check to make sure I hadn't accidentally left weights in the trim pockets from our dive off the coast last month. It proved to be empty, so I donned the BCD and continued on. We swam over each platform and on to the plane. From there, we started back to the platforms.

As we passed over the second one, Jen stopped and signaled that she was unsure of the location of the entry point. I decided to take her back to the plane and show her how to get to the exit point from there, using the nose of the plane and the contour along the quarry wall to guide us back.

As we expected, the dive was longer than 30 minutes, but only slightly so. The rock crusher proved once again elusive, with most of the structure below the thermocline and thus the brown algae bloom that severely limited visibility. We had two more dives with at least one to attempt another run of the plan.

It was already past 15:00 when we arrived back at the gazebo, and we were meeting Patrick at 16:30. We decided to dry off and stay at the quarry until the afternoon dives. I did some work from my phone, and we shared the rest of the fruit and snacks we brought with us while we talked about the dive plan and debrief for Sunday.
