Diver's Notes

As soon as we moored, someone spotted a shark! She swam around the boat several times and we were all anxious to jump in. (Even Elle was convinced by Laura to dive this one, sharks and all!)

The jump in did not disappoint! Under the boat were schools of horse-eyed jacks, yellow tail snapper, chubs and even a few groupers and triggerfish. Best of all, two reef sharks circled just a few meters below the boat, which gave us an opportunity to see them rather close!

Below the boat was a large sandy area surrounded by the reef. Tammy noted in her dive brief that there was little need in exploring too far away from that patch, as most of the fish, and sharks, would come to us if we just lingered there. After the group descended 60 feet to the bottom, I ascended back to just under where the sharks were circling--at about 30 feet. This was a good vantage point to film the sharks circling about the boat. After spending several minutes in close range to the schools of fish and the two sharks, I made my way down to the rest of the group to explore the edges of the reef a little.

From the sandy patch, several paths radiated out through the reefs. Jen and I stayed near but circled around several of these. On one occasion, a reef shark swam right over me and into the patch where Arturo and several other divers were waiting to view her close up. We enjoyed several such passes by these graceful sharks and no one seemed to grow tired of them. Elle stayed with Lauryn mostly, and she even admitted that she enjoyed seeing them, losing a lot of her preconceived fears in the process.

But the best part was still to come... While on the tag line, one of the sharks caught my attention. Just a bit further off the stern of the boat, near the tag line, she slowly swam away while I filmed. I was hoping she would turn back, but to no avail. At that point, I turned back toward the boat and came face-to-face with another reef shark! This one I caught on film--albeit totally by chance! Later, Bill had said he was trying to get my attention from way below, but knew he could not. He said she swam right up behind me and he thought she was going to run into me before I turned around. He has that on film--which I've seen, and it is quite a site! That "close encounter" was definitely the highlight of the trip so far, and one I hope not to forget.

Taking the rest of the day off from diving to go swim with some pigs and snorkel Tunderball Grotto.
