Diver's Notes

Our first time diving Mystery Lake, and first dive of 2020. We decided to join Tom for a cold dark dive with Jennifer and Tom (from her Dive Guide class). The surface waters were a chilly 69 degrees. I had on my TherMAXX 3mm and 2mm hooded vest, thick gloves and boots.

We had a rough start as Jen couldn't clear, then couldn't find me, and then got a bit disoriented. The vis was no better than 5'; then you could barely make out the high-vis colors of our dive gear. We surfaced, waited for Tom to return, regrouped and dove shallow along the wall to a sunken boat.

After checking out a the boat and a large mouth bass for a few minutes, we dove down a shear ledge to over 80 feet. At about 45', the vis started to clear a bit, but we were under the algae bloom and it was dark: we could only spot each other using our torches.

With no sunlight penetration, the temperature was several degrees cooler here than near the surface. I do not recall a thermoclien--and the graph doesn't show one either--just a gradual drop in temperature as we descended.

We bottomed out at 83' in 62 degree water and swam just above the muddy bottom for several minutes. This area of the late is mucky and featureless; our fin kicks easily stirred up the sediment which would likely not settle until long after we passed. At around 1000 PSI, I signaled that I was going to swim out and surface. We all three did so, and ended up popping up a couple of hundred yards from the entry! Lesson learned: even when diving with someone familiar with the area, take a bearing from shore! Especially when the vis is as low as we encountered. I had enough to take a bearing and swim back underwater, but the sun was out and the air temperature felt good at 85 degrees, so we laid on our backs and surface-kicked back.

It was a fun dive, but a bit chilly and featureless--especially with the bad vis, I sat out for the next dive as Tom and Jen returned to the cold water.
