Diver's Notes

On the way to our next dive site, "Rainbow", we came across pilot whales. We first spotted them a hundred yards or more off the bow of the boat, and headed in our direction. As they came closer, Jen and a few others decided to jump in. They snorkeled in their direction, and for several minutes we didn't see them. Then off our stern, about 50 yards out they surfaced again. They had dove down under the snorkelers out of site, just to appear too far away to catch up! Apparently the vis was too bad to see further than a few yards down, so they most likely swam right over them without knowing. That was the extent our not-so-near contact with the pilot whales.

Rainbow is situated near a rocky outcrop offshore from Playa Grande, and a short boat ride from the Catalina Islands. The formation is more pronounced than many of the other sites: a more solid rock wall that drops below the surface to 130' at its deepest point. Our max depth of this dive was 76 feet.

We *think* we heard a dolphin, but it's hard to tell. Some of those noise-makers that divers wear sound similar, but no one on our boat confessed to using one, and we were the only group out. We heard it on several occasions diving along the wall, and it could have been nearby, but the visibility was just not good enough to know for certain.

Toward the end of the dive, we swam over a narrow sandy channel and spotted a white-tipped reef shark! This was the second siting of a shark on this trip, but the first one I had seen.

Back on the boat, the clouds were building and we could see rainstorms in the distance. We made our way back to shore on the skiff, thus ends our SCUBA diving adventure in Costa Rica.

Tomorrow morning we head inland to Arenal Volcano to enjoy hot springs, canyon rappelling, white water rafting and more!
