Diver's Notes

Wreck of the Caribsea, with Eric Lurie and Discovery Divers, on Outrageous V. We got lucky and found a small window of decent weather before the bad stuff blew in. With Eric being fairly new, I led the dive with a negative entry and descent to the wreck. Visibility was poor near the wreck, about 20-25 feet. The wreck wasn't visible from the line until I broke through a mass of bait fish about 15' above. We circumnavigated from the anchor line (which sat almost mid-ship) to the stern clockwise.

Other than tons of bait fish, I saw several groupers, barracuda, a school of jacks, a large sheepshead and a couple of planehead filefish. We were always on the lookout for sharks, but never saw one. I shot video of most of the dive, but the water was green and only a few shots came out well. I checked Eric's air back near the anchor line and it read 1200 psi. I figured we'd stay near the line, and I meandered a few yards over to shoot some video of urchins and look for sharks teeth. When I turned back around, he had vanished! Staying at the anchor for a couple of minutes, I swam out along a reel line that had been laid toward the bow of the ship, before turning back and waiting another minute. By this time, I figured he had headed up the line, so I went up to see. I found him at the 15' line doing his best to stay buoyant. I noticed that he had air in the bottom of his BCD (he was upside down at this point), so I had him swim down to me and I dumped the valve. (Later on the boat, I walked him through the various dump valves and how best to use them, including using the "tug" method on the air-2/bcp hose instead of holding it upright, which had helped him get into trouble in the first place as it was caught on one of his d-rings.) After that, nothing much exciting happened. We got back on the boat safe and sound, and both a little wiser. I got a taste of what an instructor or guide must feel!
