Diver's Notes

The shark dive!

Just before we jump in, Tom elates us all with blaring out Jaws! theme music. Well...

Easy dive: we just kick down to the wreck 50' below, hang out on the rail, and watch the show! Gecko is down first, making sure we get in the correct position and all are present before Tammy makes the grand entrance: "chumsickle in tow, with sharks swimming all about in what seemed to be excited anticipation! (Albeit, well behaved as they didn't seem to bother with it until she was securing it off on the shipwreck railing). The show was supposed to last 20-30 minutes, however the frozen fish bait lasted a bit longer.

We were on the lookout for "Finnegan", a shark that lost its dorsal fin due to speculated shark finning. "She" was young at the time, but has now emerged to be one of--if not the--largest predator in the area! (It was debatable about the sex of fish, though looking at my shots it is apparent "she" is a "he").

After a long show, the sharks cleared and we headed over to the other side to check for sharks teeth. Before I got there, I got a tug on my fin, turned, and saw Jen motion that Elle was "half" out of air. Thinking, "OK, that's fine", I almost turned to go back about my business but thought I'd better check first. Glad I did! She wasn't "half" out, but down to below 700 psi! Knowing we had a bit of a kick back, plus a safety stop, I lead her back up.

On deck, I laughed about the error, and made sure both Jen and Elle remembered the signs for "half tank" and "low on air".

A great, fun dive! Going in, I admittedly had reservations about this type of dive. I'm still not sure about the affects, if any, or our role with nature regarding dives like this. Educational? Sure. Fun? Absolutely. Could this be a seed for an explorer and future biologist (and a lot more respect for our oceans and the predators in them)? Possibly.

Besides the reef sharks, there were many yellow tails and horse-eyed jacks. There were also a few groupers, grey angels and triggerfish. Also several goat fish were skimming along the deck picking up scraps. A grasby was within a few inches of me for a long time. During the feeding, a moray eel poked out of one of the deck hatches to gobble up whatever floated down his way. He was a smaller moray, maybe speckled. Apparently there was a larger green moray in the same hatch, but I did not see it.
