Diver's Notes

For our next dive, we headed a bit north of our resort to Turtle Reef, a crescent shaped reef from which it got its name. Large barrel and pillar sponges are the main attraction here. This is a relatively shallow dive, with most of the profile at or above 40' with the occasional dip down the 'wall' to 70'. (The wall continues to around 150' to the sand in places.) The dive started over a thick carpet of turtle grass. As we swam north with the wall to our right, we slowly encountered more and more coral 'outcroppings', until the sea grass gave way to coral beds. The coral was teaming with life: A pink frogfish, arrow crabs, scarlet-striped cleaning shrimp, banded coral shrimp, rock lobsters, etc. Fish species included chromis, parrotfish, wrasse and others common to the reefs of this area. Other notables were a French Angelfish in Intermediate stage, a green sea turtle, and several spotted morays.
