Diver's Notes

Jen and I met Eric Moorefield, Tom, Evan and students training for their wreck and deep dive certifications. Jen and Tom were shadowing Eric as part of their SSI Dive Guide training. The late afternoon charter was set up specifically for our small group of eight, but others joined us on-board to make us a total of 17 divers. We would do a double-dip on the Indra, a 328-foot-long landing craft repair ship sunk in 1992 as part of the artificial reef program. She sits upright in 70' of water 10 miles south of Emerald Isle. Her bow and stern are mostly intact, but the mid-structures have given way to the several storms and hurricanes that hammer the NC coastline. The wreck is home to many inshore species: barracuda, amberjack, sea bass, Atlantic spadefish, baitfish and others. There were also several hermit crabs, whose tracks criss-crossed the sand flats near the wreck.

We were asked to keep our dive short: there were several storms on shore, and it was late in the day. A short dive followed by a short surface interval would help ensure we could squeeze in a second dive before any storms hit or darkness fell.

I followed Jen, who was asked to watch two students (a father and son) practice using a wreck reel. They did fine, except swam way too fast. Because of this, we ended up swimming more than viewing any marine life or the ship's structure. During our short dive, we managed to circle the entire wreck once, and half again before returning to the anchor line and ascending. Over all, it was a better-than-expected dive, as visibility was good for an inshore dive (30+ feet) and the current was light.
