Diver's Notes

Joseph and I took Elle to the quarry to refresh her on skills. She has not been diving since August of 2014, and only has 9 dives logged.

Joseph began by doing an easy swim from the entry (old dock) across the training platform, basketball courts, bus, buoyancy deck, Al's car, and back along the same road. We wrapped up the dive with some basic work (mask flood, mask removal, second stage purge and removal, etc.). After wading near shore, I emptied her tank to 1000 psi and floated back out to do some buoyancy checks.

Elle did really well considering the amount of time since her last dive, and the number of dives she has logged. She needs to work on her buoyancy: I think she was a bit over weight, as she couldn't keep a plane parallel to the water. She kept swimming upright, which resulted in her propelling herself upward, then correcting by purging water, sinking, letting air in her BCD and repeating.

The visibility is the best I've seen it (better than in May), and there were fish everywhere. A lot of fry and bass (maybe not a coincidence!). Best conditions I've seen in the quarry, albeit the thermocline is very shallow (around 20'), and the water is very cold under it. We swam through the bus, the doorways being just under the thermocline. That was about as long as I wanted to stay there, wearing only a rash guard and my shorts!
